Strategic Blocks: Untouchable Time

After you’ve streamlined your work and gained extra time, it’s tempting to enjoy the open spots on your calendar. But if you don’t plan how you'll use that time, it will fill up again quickly.
Urgent tasks often take over any free time you have. If you don’t protect your open calendar, it will soon fill up with other people’s emergencies and less important work.
The answer isn’t only to manage your time better. You need to use Strategic Blocking.
To make the most of your time, set aside what you call "Untouchable Time." The idea is simple but requires real discipline: block off at least four hours each week, such as on Friday mornings, just for important, future-focused work (also known as Q2 work).
The key is to treat this time as seriously as you would a meeting with your most important stakeholder. You wouldn’t check social media during a big negotiation, so don’t do it during your strategic block. Don’t check email or answer quick questions either.
The hardest part is emotional, not tactical. At first, you might feel guilty for not answering emails or handling small problems right away.
Try to resist that feeling. The guilt just means you’re breaking old habits of reacting to everything.
When you spend time on planning, building systems, and strategy, you’ll stop having to put out constant fires. Instead, you’ll create a structure that helps you grow on your own.
Don’t let urgent tasks push aside what really matters. Set up this meeting with yourself and make sure you keep it.
